Africa in the news; really when?

“Until the lion tells his side of the story, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”

Opening with a bit of sarcasm, reflecting how Africa is hardly in the main news, but can nevertheless be found elsewhere as this column will prove.

When is Africa in the news, and is that good or bad news?

This rhetorical question will be answered by most non-Africans by enumerating issues like hunger, malnutrition, disease, poverty, war, over-population, corruption, dictatorship etc. and so painting a classic negative picture of Africa. The good news, remember ‘Africa Rising’, is there too, but hardly ever wins or is not reported interestingly enough to be noticed.

Then on the other hand, when one expects news to hit the headlines, it never happens. A case in point is the ongoing conflict in Ambazonia – Southern Cameroon, which for a long time went under-reported, to the disappointment of those involved.

This column is intended to draw your attention to some well-known and less known global and local media reporting on Africa.

But then again can you stillbe called ‘local’ when you can be found on the internet through a google search?

Selected Media featuring Africa

A Google search led me to over fifty media featuring Africa, mainly on the Internet, but also through Facebook, Twitter and even on YouTube.

I will first list some of the obvious well-known ones, with just their name, URL and ‘about’ or promo-sentence. I reserve my comments till the conclusion at the end of this column.

A joke and the graphic reality from the past

When I worked in Ethiopia in the late 90s, I was told this joke:
A journalist from a rural area contacted his editor in Addis Ababa with the scoop:
“a crocodile has eaten a Peace Corps volunteer”The Editor replies: “Only one?”

I recently tried to verify this storyand discovered the sad origin of this joke.
“The Day the Crocodile Ate Bill Olsen”

As the People of Ambazonia (Southern Cameroon) discovered even ‘bad news’, like an African government suppressing and even killing its own people, is not always worth the World News Scene. Too many other hotspots, like US-North Korea, Yemen Iran, Ebola in Congo, Venezuela, Refugees knocking at Europe’s gates and more.

The above African News sites, whether Africa biased as a main core business or an option offer the possibilities to get recent stories and even in depth reports.

Unfortunately few present their news from an African perspective but toe the line of their editorial policy. On the other hand some, like Bareta News can become too close to reality and lose their objectivity as a reporting media agency. Finally online reading of this column should be ideal to scout out some of the URL’s listed above.

Your comments are as always welcome!
