Botswana cracks down on illegal tourism operators

Botswana has announced the closure of an illegal tourism operating company.

Rule Jimmy Opelo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism (MENT), said his ministry has instructed World Link Travel and Tours to close its operations with immediate effect.

“This is due to the fact that the company is not licensed to operate as a tourism operator (travel agency) in Botswana, thus it has been operating illegally,” said Opelo.

He further cautioned other tourism operators functioning illegally to close shop with ‘immediate effect and follow the necessary process to legalise your operations’.

“Illegal acts are punishable by law,” Opelo said, highlighting that his ministry will crack the whip on unregistered operators.

Botswana’s tourism industry is one of the industries government has earmarked for the country’s diversification drive.

Last year, Botswana participated in the World’s leading Travel Trade Show, ITB, in Berlin, Germany, where over 10,000 exhibitors from 183 countries participated.
