From Reggae star to MP

One of Uganda’s top Afrobeats musicians, Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, has been sworn in as a member of parliament.

He was sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, at the parliamentary buildings in the capital, Kampala, following his victory in a by-election as an independent candidate.

After the swearing in, she gave him a copy of the house rules and the constitution, adding:
“Honorable Kyagulanyi, I congratulate and welcome you to the 10th parliament. Study them and they will guide you.”

As an independent MP, Mr Kyagulanyi was asked to choose which side of the house he preferred to sit and he picked the opposition side.

Prior to his swearing in, an entourage of bodaboda riders ( motorycycle taxis) took to the streets to escort him to parliament buildings.

A beaming and excited Wine said, “I have always said that if Parliament doesn’t come to the ‘Ghetto’, the ‘Ghetto’ will come to Parliament.”
