A 59-year-old man from Almere in the province of Flevoland, Netherlands, has been arrested for carrying out unlicenced circumcisions at a refugee centre located in Katwijk.
The unidentified man was said to have carried out the circumcision without licence on ‘young boys’ in a careless manner.
He carried out the procedure on six boys in one day in late last month, the police said. One of the operations got so complicated and extreme that the boy had to be taken to the hospital.
The authorities would investigate how the man came to carry out the procedures in Almere and if he has done similar operations elsewhere.
A spokeswoman for the refugee resettlement agency COA told the national newspaper Telegraaf that it’s not feasible to monitor all that happens within the walls of the refugee centre, since according to her, “1,000 people live at the centre which is not a prison and people can come and go as they please. “What happens in people’s rooms remains private.
It was the centre’s own health staff that alerted the authorities to the unauthorised circumcisions.
It is noted that, although legal circumcision of boys is permitted in the Netherlands, it is however not covered by Dutch health insurance.
