Victorious Indomitable Lions received by President Biy

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions, which won the 31st edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2017) tournament in Gabon were received by President Paul Biya at the Palace of Unity.

The Cameroonian national football team, which beat Egypt 2-1 in the final in Libreville, arrived the capital Yaoundé to a tumultuous welcome by Cameroonians. Their convoy from the airport to the hotel took three hours to cover the 12-km distance as huge crowds lined the streets to welcome them.

At the special state reception, the Nations Cup trophy was presented to the president. The players received national medals from the president.

Later, they travelled in open-top vehicles through the streets of the capital to parade the trophy to fans.

At the end of the ceremony Cameroon First Lady Chantal Biya posed for a series of photos with the players. A jubilant crowd of young Cameroonians and several dancing groups camped outside the players’ hotel as the victory celebrations continued into a second day.

Cameroon’s success in Gabon ended a 15-year wait to win the tournament again and gave them their fifth title.

The country will host the next edition of the Nations Cup in 2019.
