The Ghanaian Afro pop singer Noella Wiyaala (known under the stage name Wiyaala) has teamed up with a seven-piece all-female international band GRRRL.
GRRRL describe themselves as ‘a bespoke electronic collaboration between women musicians from areas of conflict around the world.’
Wiyaala who sings in her native Sissala and Waale dialects as well as in English met the group last year and have had the opportunity to perform in a couple of minor international shows.
However, the recent first major performance of the all-girls band at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in the United Kingdom has been described as an incredible act.
To those familiar with Wiyaala, the performance was no surprise. They expect her to have done her home work before teaming up with the group. Besides, she’s known for her fiery performance whenever she’s on stage. What was however noticeable was the ease at which the group blended together seamlessly, considering their different background and culture within a short period of coming together.
To further confirm what the audience of the show saw, Wiyaala had this to day: “When we come together and sing, you can hardly tell we are from different countries. It’s like branches of the same tree.”
If GRRRL is able to keep it all together, the world will surely take in more incredible performances from the group!
