A 2017 drama film about a Xhosa initiation has been selected as South Africa’s Oscars bid.
“The Wound”, directed by John Trengove and stars Nakhane Touré, was screened in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival where it received rave reviews.
It was subsequently selected as the South African entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
The controversial film examines sexuality, masculinity and cultural identity set against the backdrop of the traditional Xhosa initiation ceremony.
The only time South Africa has won a foreign-language Academy was for the critically-acclaimed 2006 film “Tsotsi”.
